A large tree fell overnight and landed on the hood of a pickup early Friday morning in a neighborhood northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

The tree crushed the front end of the pickup parked near South Hoover and West Second streets in the Echo Park area.

No injuries were reported, but neighbors said they were awakened by the crash of the tree as its thick trunk landed on the Ford F-150, shattering the windshield and crumpling the front of the pickup. The truck’s owners said the pickup has been in the family for a long time.

Hugo Basquez said his mother woke him up around 4 a.m. after she received a Citizen app alert about the downed tree.

“When I first saw it, I was in shock because this car has been many times in our family,” Basquez said. “We’ve been through a lot with this car, and seeing it like this is sad. It’s like losing a family member.”

Crews were removing the tree, which fell across the street, Friday morning.

The tree fell during overnight rain from a storm that moved into Los Angeles County late Thursday. The storm will produce scattered light showers Friday before heavier rain overnight into Saturday.
