SAN DIEGO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — With wet weather creating slippery conditions across San Diego County, law enforcement is asking drivers to stay vigilant and practice safe driving to reduce the risk of accidents.

The conditions have given drivers more to watch for.

“More potholes than I would like. It messes up tires, can damage your car, but also for safety,” said Mission Valley resident James Houston.

Another big issue in some parts has been flooding, including at the intersection of Sorrento Valley Road and Carmel Mountain Road in Carmel Valley.

Some drivers took the risk of going around road closure signs and driving through, which law enforcement officials advise against.

“They need to pay attention to those signs. Usually these are pre-set in some of our very highly-likely to flood areas and it’s there for everyone’s safety,” said Officer Anthony Carrasco with the San Diego Police Department.

In past storms, areas like La Jolla have seen stranded drivers in pooling water and parts of Mission Valley have too.

“You drive your car through and then the water splashes all up in the air,” said San Diego resident Anthony Lightfoot.

Police continue to remind people that the best thing they can do if they come across flooding is to turn around. Also, give yourself more time to get to where you’re going and don’t speed.

If you start to hydroplane don’t slam on the breaks, rather steer into an area can you safely proceed to band slowly start to break. Additionally, if you see any downed power lines call 911.

If you have to hit the road in the rain, check your tire tread before.

“One of the tricks is to take a penny, turn it upside down and the distance between the top and the head of Abraham Lincoln – that’s about the appropriate the minimum tread depth in California,” said Officer Carrasco.
