CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) — The City of Clovis is bracing for more cold and rainy conditions on Monday after several days of stormy weather in the Central Valley.
Clovis Police is asking the community to take extra safety measures after the department reported a busy weekend.
Corporal Jacob Mulhern said they have seen many downed trees, standing water filling streets and more accidents than usual since Thursday.
This comes as more rain is expected in the Central Valley late into Monday, and again Thursday into early Friday.
Mulhern said while some hazards are unpreventable, there are things drivers can do to avoid accidents.
“They’re following too closely and they’re not having proper, operating tires, windshield wipers or lights. When your windshield wipers are on, you need to have your lights on, and they need to be in working order,” he said, adding that drivers should also follow at a greater distance than normal, and turn around at areas with a lot of standing water.
Other storm hazards, like flooding, can affect homes. Mulhern said that’s why the City of Clovis is providing free sandbags to residents within city limits.
“A lot of people use them for water coming either into their homes,” said Mulhern. “Other people use them for their driveways.”
Action News witnessed Clovis residents Robert and Joey Verduzco taking advantage of the free supply on Sunday.
“We’ve got a flooding problem right now,” said Robert Verduzco. “We should’ve done this two days ago. Got ready for it.”
The sandbags are available at the Clovis Corporation Yard at 155 N. Sunnyside Ave. The station is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for Clovis residents to use whenever a storm is anticipated.
Residents are asked to bring their own shovel to fill the bags, and there is a limit of 10 bags per household.
If there are any other hazards in the city, the Clovis Police Department is asking that they be reported.
Mulhern said the department will partner with the city’s public works department to take care of it.
