San Francisco’s Monday morning commute ground to a halt as two separate crashes hours apart brought major traffic delays on key routes into and out of the city.
The first collision, reported around 9 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 80 just east of Fourth Street, left at least one person injured and spilled fuel on the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash prompted a severe traffic alert as crews shut down right lanes and the Sterling onramp near the Bay Bridge approach to contain the spill and assist the injured. Officials said there was no immediate estimate for when the lanes would reopen.

About an hour later, another crash on northbound U.S. 101 just north of Cesar Chavez Street blocked a lane and caused additional slowdowns across the city.
CHP said the 10:11 a.m. crash also resulted in injuries, further compounding congestion that had already rippled through SoMa, the Central Freeway, and approaches to the Bay Bridge.
Motorists were urged to avoid both areas and use alternate routes as emergency crews worked to clear debris, manage the fuel spill and investigate the crashes.
