SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Loved ones gathered at the Fair Oaks Bridge to honor the life of a Sacramento County woman who was tragically killed a year ago. Her boyfriend is the alleged murderer.

Family and loved ones of Terissa Mae Marcum held a candlelight vigil Monday night.

Terissa’s family described her as a loving and caring person who had overcome much adversity and was back on the right path before her death. They hope to raise awareness for those experiencing domestic violence.

“She was an amazing person. She had the most beautiful laugh, and a huge smile would light up an entire room. And she was stolen way too soon in her life. Just two weeks after her 29th birthday,” said Felicity Norris, Terissa’s sister.

Last November, Terissa was stabbed to death. Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies arrested her boyfriend, 29-year-old Paul Barclay, in connection with her death, and he is pending trial.

“Honestly, he doesn’t deserve to never be out again,” said Norris.

Terissa’s sister and mother have turned their loss into purpose, raising awareness about domestic violence.

“If you see something, say something,” said Michelle Kafton, Terissa’s mother.

Felicity added, “Honestly, if you’re in a relationship, I understand that it’s really hard to get out of them. That you love that person. But you have to understand that they do not love you, no matter what they do.”

One year after her death, emotions remain heavy.

“We’re trying not to allow him to take anything else from our family,” said Kafton.

The family plans to be in court for Paul Barclay’s next hearing on Dec. 1.

“We just won’t allow him to take away from the image of who she is any more than he already has,” said Norris.
