ROSEVILLE, Calif. —

A Planned Parenthood leader on Monday announced her campaign to run for one of California’s newly drawn congressional districts.

Lauren Babb Tomlinson, who is Planned Parenthood Mar Monte’s chief public affairs officer, plans to run for Congressional District 6. Currently, the district held by Democrat Ami Bera covers parts of Sacramento County, including Rancho Cordova, Carmichael, Rio Linda and Citrus Heights.

But since the passing of voter-approved Proposition 50, the district now includes the Roseville and Rocklin areas of Placer County. Bera has also announced that he plans to run for District 3, which was one of five districts heavily redistricted as part of Prop 50’s aim to send more Democrats to Congress.

Without an incumbent, District 6 will have an open seat that Tomlinson is now pursuing. She said her platform is focused on creating a new generation of leadership focused on getting results for the working class. Her campaign page lists lowering everyday costs, expanding access to affordable health care, increasing public safety, and strengthening social security and Medicare as some of her goals.

“When Trump’s bill was signed this summer, my Planned Parenthood had to close five health centers, which meant 22,000 patients lost access to care—particularly family medicine, prenatal care and behavioral health,” Tomlinson told KCRA 3’s Ashley Zavala. “It was the most devastating day of my career. And so, I decided to do something about it. I’m running because I want people to have affordable access to healthcare.”

Democratic leaders, including Gov. Gavin Newsom, mobilized months ago to push for new congressional maps, stating that the move is a response to Texas’ redistricting efforts at the request of President Donald Trump.

Prop 50’s passing strips redistricting power away from the voter-approved, citizen-led independent redistricting commission for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 elections. California’s maps are typically redrawn after every census.

Currently, the California GOP and the U.S. Department of Justice are suing to try to block Prop 50 from going into effect.

Tomlinson says if Prop 50 is blocked, she still intends to run for office.

“I think the most important thing and the most incredible thing is voters voted on these maps and I’m incredibly at the will of the voters and I want to make sure that I’m representing them,” she said. “Proposition 50 was such a good example of why democracy is needed and it gives me an opportunity as a not-career-politician to take the fight to Washington for working families like mine.”

There is also a proposal to prevent lawmakers who voted in favor of Prop 50 from running for office for 10 years. That effort has been cleared to begin gathering signatures.
