CHICO, Calif. – The Bidwell Wildlife Rehabilitation Group announced this week that avian flu has reached Northern California.
The group reported receiving accounts of birds, particularly geese and ducks, found in yards and public spaces, unable to fly.
Testing conducted with the Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed the presence of avian flu, said the group.
There is no treatment or medication for avian flu, with only about 10% of birds recovering from the disease.
The group advises residents to leave any birds unable to fly alone and avoid touching or picking them up.
Additionally, they recommend keeping household pets inside and contacting local animal control to report the bird.
