Layers Superfood Bar, located on Channing Way, officially opened its doors to the Berkeley community on Oct. 4.For locals looking for a flavorful treat in a thoughtfully designed setting, Layers Superfood Bar offers a health-conscious choice, according to Pepe Sakulkerewatana, the Layers manager

Layers acquired its name from its layered approach to building açaí bowls — often with RITZ crumble, a special smoothie base, fresh fruit, gluten-free house granola, chia pudding and coconut flakes or whip — to create a purposeful blend of ingredients. Uniquely, Layers curates superfood blends with a modern Mediterranean twist.

“Layers is one of my partner’s dreams. She wants to bring a healthy and design conscious (space) to the Berkeley community,” Sakulkerewatana said.

Those crafting each açaí bowl, Nanno Limprasat and Aun-aun Wattanavorakulchot, adhere to a “no added sugar, no ice, no added water” fresh, real ingredient guideline that makes for a thicker açaí bowl.

“We want to be very transparent with our customers and let them know we are not adding other stuff,” Sakulkerewatana said.

Along with the aesthetic and healthy design of Layers’ açaí bowls, Salkulkerewatana and Limprasat cultivate a hospitable atmosphere for their shop.

Layers Superfood Bar is decorated with a minimalist, calm and modern interior with touches of greenery.

“We try to make this space not only a restaurant, but a warm and welcome place,” Salkulkerewatana said.

Salkulkerewatana said the process of opening Layers Superfood Bar was  challenging, especially when it came to creating the menu, “We underwent trial and error a lot.”

However, he emphasized the community’s warm support for the shop.

Limprasat owned a previous açaí business at a different location and spent a year developing her recipe before the opening of Layers, according to Salkulkerewatana.

Layers’ menu consists of six uniquely layered açaí bowls and seven smoothies, common fruits being banana, strawberry and mango, paired with more uncommon ingredients such as activated charcoal, blue spirulina and sea moss. Prices range from $8 to $14 depending on the size; as of now, they are handing out discounts in exchange for feedback.

“For the short term, we are trying to make it operate as efficient as possible,” Sakulkerewatana said.

Layers’ long-term vision for the business is to potentially franchise, collaborate with other local businesses and expand its menu according to customers’ wants.
