The Interstate 696 service drive/11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue intersection has again topped a list of Michigan’s 20 most dangerous,  according to a study by attorneys who specialize in auto crash law.

Several other Macomb and Oakland county crossings also were named in Michigan Auto Law’s 2024 report identifying the Top 20 Most Dangerous Intersections in Michigan. The Farmington Hills-based law firm released its report on Monday.

The report’s goal isn’t to alarm motorists, but to help them stay informed and safe, said Steve Gursten, president and attorney attorney at the firm.

“When drivers understand where these dangerous intersections are, and what behaviors contribute to crashes, they can make smarter, safer decisions behind the wheel,” Gursten said. “Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools we have for preventing accidents.”

To compile its list, attorneys at the firm analyze Michigan State Police data on car crashes at intersections statewide for the previous year.

Intersections are defined as roads with a traffic signal, four-way stop or roundabout for the list. Crashes within 200 feet count toward an intersection’s total.

On the border of Warren and Center Line in Macomb County, 11 Mile/Van Dyke intersection has long been a hot spot for vehicular crashes and typically is named in the annual study.

The intersection reported 185 crashes, with 26 injuries for 2024. That’s a 15% decrease from 218 crashes in 2023.

The remainder of the list includes:

2) 181/2 Mile Road at Van Dyke in Sterling Heights

This roundabout had a total of 162 crashes and 12 injuries. Total crashes jumped 20% from 135 in 2023 to 162 last year.

3) Martin Parkway at North Pontiac Trail, Commerce Township

Oakland County’s largest roundabout had 152 crashes and 9 injuries. The number of crashes fell to 151 in 2024 from 160 in 2023.

4) Schoolcraft Road at Telegraph Road, Redford Township

This intersection saw 137 total crashes, a decrease from 154 pileups the year before. It also had 26 injuries in 2024.

5) North Hamilton Street at Washtenaw Avenue, Ypsilanti

This is the first year this interchange has made the list with 132 total crashes and 7 injuries. That’s way up from 12 crashes and zero injuries in 2023.

6) Orchard Lake Road at 14 Mile Road, Farmington Hills

This roundabout had 109 total crashes with 5 injuries. That’s a decrease from 132 crashes in 2023.

7)  Telegraph Road at 12 Mile Road, Southfield.

This crossing reported 106 total crashes and 23 injuries. The total increased from 99 total crashes but decreased from 35 injuries in 2023.

8) 10 Mile Road at Interstate 94, St. Clair Shores

Ninety-six total crashes were reported, along with 1 fatality and 21 injuries. The total decreased from 100 total crashes and 33 Injuries in 2023.

9) Middlebelt Road at Schoolcraft Road, Livonia

There were 95 total crashes, 14 injuries. The total increased from 80 crashes in 2023.

10) 11 Mile Road/I-696 at Hoover Road, Warren

There was a total of 86 crashes, with 1 fatality, and 18 injuries

The total crashes and injuries stayed consistent with 2023 results although there was 1 fatality in 2024.

11) State Road at Wellsworth Road, Ann Arbor

There were 85 total crashes reported at this roundabout and 5 Injuries. The total significantly decreased from 126 total crashes in 2023.

12) Dixie Highway at Interstate 75 in Springfield Township

With 80 total crashes and 19 injuries, this location is new to the top 20 ranking.

13) Lee Road at Whitmore Lake Road, Green Oak Township

This roundabout had 80 total crashes and 3 injuries. This location is new to the top 20 ranking.

14) Joy Road at M-39, Detroit

There were 78 total crashes with 27 injuries reported. That’s an increase over 72 crashes in 2023.

15) Southfield Road at W. 11 Mile Road, Lathrup Village

There were 76 total crashes, 38 injuries.

The total decreased from 96 total crashes, but increased with 30 Injuries in 2023.

16) Hall Road (M-59) at Hayes Road, Macomb Township

There were 76 total crashes, 14 injuries. This location is new to the top 20 ranking.

17) Hall Road at Schoenherr Road, Sterling Heights

There were 76 total crashes, 11 injuries. This location is new to the top 20 ranking.

18) 12 Mile Road at Interstate 94, St. Clair Shores

There were 75 total crashes, 1 fatality, and 11 injuries. This location is new to the top 20 ranking.

19) U.S. 313 at Wealthy Street, Grand Rapids

There were 73 total crashes, 12 injuries.

The total significantly decreased from 112 total crashes and 1 fatality in 2023.

20) 11 Mile Road at Gratiot Avenue, Roseville

There were 72 total crashes, 18 injuries. The total decreased from 69 total crashes in 2023.
