The Sacramento City Council on Tuesday heard a proposal to annex 447 acres of land near the Sacramento International Airport into the city for development into an industrial complex. The plot of land is located by Power Line Road in unincorporated Sacramento County, and landowners want to annex it into the city to improve access to water and sewage services.During the meeting, the council did not vote on the annexation, opting to continue the hearing until the next city council meeting on December 2. Mayor Kevin McCarty recommended extending the discussion beyond one night to allow more time for deliberation.Fifty residents shared their thoughts on the project, with many speakers being members of local labor unions, urging the council to approve the project. They argued that it would bring thousands of jobs to the city and generate millions of dollars in economic impact.“When we could be a part of a project this size, this close to home, it only makes all the sense in the world,” one resident said. Residents living near the land in question voiced opposition, expressing concerns about increased traffic, air pollution, and environmental impacts on nearby residents and an elementary school. “My concern is that I feel like in Sacramento after all these years, I’ve watched it get eaten up part by part,” one resident said. Councilmembers Kaplan and Maple excused themselves from the discussion due to conflicts of interest. This project has already gone through years of meetings, with more to come. The next meeting is scheduled for December 2, and the proposal must still return to the county and the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) for further consideration.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

The Sacramento City Council on Tuesday heard a proposal to annex 447 acres of land near the Sacramento International Airport into the city for development into an industrial complex.

The plot of land is located by Power Line Road in unincorporated Sacramento County, and landowners want to annex it into the city to improve access to water and sewage services.

During the meeting, the council did not vote on the annexation, opting to continue the hearing until the next city council meeting on December 2. Mayor Kevin McCarty recommended extending the discussion beyond one night to allow more time for deliberation.

Fifty residents shared their thoughts on the project, with many speakers being members of local labor unions, urging the council to approve the project. They argued that it would bring thousands of jobs to the city and generate millions of dollars in economic impact.

“When we could be a part of a project this size, this close to home, it only makes all the sense in the world,” one resident said.

The next meeting is scheduled for December 2, and the proposal must still return to the county and the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) for further consideration.
