WASHINGTON (7News) — The National Park Service launched a nationwide recruitment strategy to recruit up to 500 law enforcement officers. There would be 300 more U.S. Park Police officers in D.C., New York City and San Francisco and 200 for other park areas, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI).
“America’s national parks deserve the very best public servants working to keep them safe,” said National Park Service (NPS) deputy director for operations Frank Lands. “These officers will help protect irreplaceable resources, support our park communities, and ensure millions of visitors can enjoy their national parks safely.”

Applicants for the ranger positions must have passed a qualifying federal, state, local or tribal law enforcement academy or served in a sworn law enforcement position within the last three years. Some candidates can complete a four-week bridge training course to obtain their NPS law enforcement commission, according to the DOI.
All new officers would have to participate in at least 11 weeks of field training with seasoned NPS officials, DOI officials said.
