BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — AKC Reunite announced the donation of its 120th AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailer, the second one for Kern County.
This equipment will be available to dispatch to any disaster scene that needs assistance sheltering pets.
This trailer was delivered on November 16th and will help the Kern County Animal Services.
The trailer was made possible by the Bakersfield Obedience Training Club, American, Whippet Club, Gordon Setter Club of America, Anderson Kennel Club and Deep Harbor Kennel Club.
“AKC Reunite is thrilled to provide a second trailer for Kern County,” said Tom Sharp, President & CEO of AKC Reunite. “From wildfires to earthquakes, this area is prone to several different natural disasters and we’re proud to support the community with these additional resources.”
“We’re incredibly grateful to AKC Reunite for providing this vital resource to Kern County. The Pet Disaster Relief Trailer enhances our ability to respond quickly and effectively when animals and their families are displaced by emergencies, not only here at home but throughout the region,” said Nick Cullen, Director of Kern County Animal Services. “Equipment like this allows us to bring critical shelter and care directly to the communities that need it most, and we’ve already seen how valuable that can be. Similar resources helped us support response efforts during the Altadena fires earlier this year. This trailer strengthens our preparedness and our commitment to protecting both people and pets when disaster strikes.”
The equipment in the AKC Pet Disaster Relief trailers helps to create a safe, temporary home-base for at least 65 pets during the first 72 hours after a disaster is declared.
The trailers have animal care items including crates and carriers, AKC Reunite microchips and an AKC Reunite universal microchip scanner, bowls, collars and leashes, fans, lighting, a generator, cleaning supplies, and maintenance items.
The first trailer was received in April 2024.
