HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) – Five people are injured after a helicopter went down at a “Cars and Copters on the Coast” event in Southern California.

The Bell 222 helicopter was headed for the event and spiraled out of control as it began its descent over the parking lot in Huntington Beach.

It got tangled in some palm trees and ended up hooked onto a stairway at a beachfront hotel.

Police say two people onboard made it out off the dangling aircraft, which witnesses say was smoldering but not on fire.

Three people on the ground also were taken to the hospital with injuries.
