You know it and I know it: Los Angeles brims with cool izakayas. But despite its energetic food scene, Long Beach has been somewhat behind in the category until Homareya opened in September — a new izakaya from chef Yoya Takahashi, formerly of Kodo and Hamasaku. Homareya has a fun seafood-focused menu with a strong slate of specials, some wacky and wonderful signatures (think yoshoku quesadillas), and a deep sake list. It’s an exciting restaurant for Long Beach and amply worth the drive from Los Angeles, too.
If you’re driving all the way to Long Beach, take an extra hour to explore. Park in the very affordable garage (two hours free), and dip into Ism Brewing, Beachwood Blendery, or Recreational Coffee. If you’re in a bang-bang kind of mood, the wonderful Ammatoli, Sonoratown, and Milana’s are all right there.
