Just how common is it for Southern California to get rain during the month of October? It’s rare, but not abnormal.
LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Southern Californians are more used to seeing heat in early to mid-October as opposed to a cold storm, like the one that drenched and chilled the region Tuesday.
So just how common is it to see rain this time of year?
Significant rain in Southern California for the month of October is somewhat rare, although it does happen on occasion, according to the National Weather Service.
The normal amount of rain for this month in downtown Los Angeles is a little over half of an inch. From Tuesday’s storm alone, we got more than the month’s average total in just one day.
Downtown L.A. received just under an inch and quarter of rain at last report around midday Tuesday.
There have only been 20 Octobers on record with an inch or more of rain since the 1800s. That’s more than 120 years worth of data and history, and now we can add Tuesday’s storm to that .
Looking ahead, the models do not show any significant rain in the forecast for the next week to 10 days.
