BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Bakersfield Fire Department and the Kern County Fire Department did a live safety demonstration illustrating the serious fire hazard of dipping a cold or frozen turkey into hot oil.

During the demonstration, firefighters from both departments will show the rapid ignition that can occur when a frozen or partially frozen turkey is submerged in hot cooking oil.

The demonstration is made for educational purposes to increase awareness among the public ahead of the holiday season.

Both departments emphasized the importance of making sure the turkey is thawed and cooked properly with the appropriate amount of oil. They also emphasize not to overheat the oil before putting a turkey in.

If a fire were to happen, both departments said to cover the pot, use a hose to extinguish the fire outside, and use a fire extinguisher.
