Orange County residents and others were advised to avoid the 5 Freeway heading south toward San Diego County as of late Saturday morning following a police shooting and standoff that began in Buena Park and ended near Camp Pendleton.
The freeway was closed ovenight in both directions near the base, with drivers stuck in their cars into Saturday for hours, after a California Highway Patrol pursuit ended in the standoff, according to TV broadcast reports in San Diego.
The pursuit started in Buena Park at around 2 a.m., Gina Avalos, public information officer for the Oceanside Police Department, told NBC7 San Diego News.
A man reported to be armed ran from his disabled car with a gun and took cover in nearby brush, and the CHP and San Diego County Sheriff’s units shut down the freeway. At one point, according to Avalos, shots were fired and the man was “presumed to be shot and armed with a handgun, refusing to surrender.”
He was taken into custody as of 8 a.m., the station reported.
CHP officers were routing drivers off the freeway on Saturday morning. As of 9:30 a.m., two lanes on the northbound side were reopened, as well as the right shoulder on the southbound side, the CHP announced on X.

One woman said she had been stuck in her car for four hours.
Hannah Brown told NBC7 she landed at Los Angeles International Airport shortly after midnight, then headed to Oceanside. She was just 10 minutes from her destination when the freeway traffic came to a halt.
“Four hours with no movement. There’s been no communication, nothing available online and we’ve just been hearing people getting out of their cars, trying to walk up and see what the situation is,” Brown said in a telephone interview with the station.
“I’m in the traffic jam going 5S. Everyone has turned their car off and are just basically napping for like three hours now. Pretty wild,” another person wrote on Reddit.
Another wrote: “I’m on the 5N been stuck since 2:30 or so. It was black because everyone turned off their cars and lights. It’s 6:20 am now. It’s getting light out now. People are starting to come out of their cars and stretch.”
Drivers said CHP officers could not tell them when the situation would be resolved and all lanes would be reopened.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
