SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Another storm system is moving into Southern California, bringing scattered coastal showers Thursday morning and more widespread rain into Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say light showers — generally a tenth of an inch or less — will move from coastal waters into San Diego’s shoreline communities early Thursday. Additional scattered showers may develop Thursday afternoon as a colder low-pressure system drops south along the coast.

The strongest round of rainfall is expected Thursday evening with the arrival of a cold front. Weather officials say showers are expected to continue overnight, and there’s a slight chance of thunderstorms.

Rain totals through Saturday could range from around 1 inch at the coast to 1.5–2 inches in the mountains, with locally higher amounts. NWS says there is a 30% chance of at least one inch of rain near the coast and a 50–70% chance in the mountains. Here’s a look at forecast rainfall totals Thursday afternoon through Saturday:

South to southeast winds will also strengthen late Thursday afternoon and evening, with gusts between 25–30 mph near coastal areas and offshore.

Though heavy snow is expected more north — in the San Bernardino and Riverside County mountains — from Thursday night through early Friday, San Diego’s mountain areas aren’t expected to receive much, if any.

Looking ahead, forecasters say high pressure will build on Sunday, kicking off a dry and warmer stretch all the way through Thanksgiving. Sunday’s highs are expected to reach lower to mid-60s at the coast, mid-60s to near 70 in the valleys, and lower to mid-70s in the lower deserts.

By Thanksgiving Day, temperatures will climb several degrees above average, with NWS anticipating highs around 70 near the coast and valleys, and mid to upper 70s in the deserts.
