Dressing up as a sweet potato casserole, all to merrily run a few miles soon after sun-up on Thanksgiving Day?

It’s a tall and tasty order. You’ll have to first determine whether to emphasize the famous dish’s marshmallow topping, or the spiced pecan layer, or, of course, simply create an outfit that salutes the sweet potato.

Adding to this cheerful costume challenge? You have to be able to easily move in your upbeat attire.

This is what dedicated Turkey Trotters face each November, and while many runners forgo the festive dress while participating in the Thanksgiving tradition, several people don a turkey hat or go with top that suggests a can of cranberry.

However you dress or don’t, you’ll want to trot by the sites for some of Southern California’s best-known Turkey Trots before Nov. 27 arrives.

Turkey Trot Los Angeles has a route full of visual splendor, with DTLA gems like Walt Disney Concert Hall adding to the pomp of the occasion. A festival at Grand Park will conclude the funs, which include a 5K and a 10K and a one-mile Dog Jog, as well as other options.

The Long Beach Turkey Trot has that awesome ocean air, so bracing, and the reputation for welcoming a bevy of creatively costumed runners. Make for Rosie’s Dog Beach for the fun, which includes the half-mile Wingding for kids. Note: Pups aren’t permitted at this popular run.

The Drumstick Dash in North Hollywood, which raises money for Hope the Mission, will take participants through the NoHo Arts District. The event’s moving motto? “Move Your Feet So Others Can Eat.”

Dana Point Harbor will soon be in full holiday twinkle, and those decorated boats will be on the move, but on Thanksgiving it is all about the long-running Dana Point Turkey Trot, a happening that will mark its big 50th in just a couple of years.
