USD’s women’s basketball team scored a 57-48 victory over New Mexico State in a matinee at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Monday, while the San Diego State women lost -67 to Penn State in their final game of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.
Guard Olivia Owen scored 17 points and had six assists as USD outscored the Aggies (1-3) 36-24 in the second half to improve to 2-4. Ysabella Von Seipler added 11 points for the Toreros.
San Diego State (4-3) lost despite getting a career-high 24 points from Nat Martinez and 14 points from fellow sophomore guard Naomi Panganiban (La Jolla Country Day). Penn State (5-1) had five players in double figures and out-scored the Aztecs 21-7 in the second quarter.
Men’s soccer
Point Loma Nazarene’s third-seeded men’s soccer team (15-3-2) will host 10th-seeded University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (12-5-5) in the third round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Saturday. The match starts at 2 p.m.

Cuyamaca College defeated Fullerton 3-2 on Saturday behind goals by Esteban Salais, David Lora Araux and Diego Esquivel and two assists from Victor Renteria. The Coyotes (19-1-2) host 11th-seeded Los Angeles City College at 2 p.m. Tuesday,
Thirteenth-seeded MiraCosta (13-4-6) came from behind with two goals in the final two minutes to score a 3-2 upset win at fourth-seeded El Camino. Cesar Cruz scored the game-winner on a feed by Steven Renner in the final minute. Lincoln Newcomer and Danny Barbosa also scored goals for the Spartans, who host 21st-seeded Santa Barbara Tuesday at 2 p.m.
Women’s soccer
In second-round action at the 3C2A playoffs, MiraCosta (13-5-6) lost at Santa Barbara on penalty kicks after the teams tied 1-1 through regulation and overtime play. Southwestern (15-4-4) lost 3-0 at Mount San Antonio.
Women’s volleyball
PLNU women’s volleyball team (24-4) will be the No. 1 seed and the host of the NCAA Division II West Regionals starting Dec. 4 on campus.
• San Diego State (14-15) defeated Fresno 3-0 last Saturday to claim the sixth and final berth in this week’s Mountain West Tournament. The Aztecs will face third-seeded Wyoming in Wednesday’s first round from Las Vegas.
• West Coast Conference champion USD (23-4) hosts Pacific Tuesday and Gonzaga Saturday before learning its NCAA Tournament seed.
• The top four teams from the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference will be playing second-round matches Tuesday in the California Community College Athletic Association Tournament. Top-seeded Mesa (27-1) hosts 16th-seeded San Bernardino Valley (15-8), eighth-seeded Miramar (22-7) hosts ninth-seeded College of the Desert (21-6), 11th-seeded Palomar (18-7) travels to sixth-seeded Moorpark (21-8) and 15th-seeded MiraCosta (16-10) heads to second-seeded Los Angeles Mission (24-4).
Basketball
The county’s two NCAA Division II universities met in men’s and women’s basketball last week and split.
PLNU’s seventh-ranked men’s team improved to 4-0 with a 75-61 win over Cal State San Marcos (1-2).
CSUM’s women (2-0) defeated PLNU 62-50, dropping the Sea Lions to 2-2.
Senior guard James Nobles paced the PLNU men with 18 points, while forward Andrew Nagy scored 14 and guard Jaden Matingou and forward Andrew Hommes each had 11. Guard Max Tengan led CSUSM with 13 points.
Ruby Vlahov had 19 points for the Cougars’ women, while Kristan Yumul had 18 on 6-of-11 shooting from 3-point range. Sophie Morales had 17 points and nine rebounds for PLNU.
JC football
Two local community colleges won bowl games Saturday.
Southwestern College defeated Moorpark 31-7 in the Patriotic Bowl on the Jaguars’ campus to finish 8-3 on the season.
Quarterback Brayten Silbor completed 12 of 23 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown and scored twice on short runs. Caleb Blocker gained 100 yards on 20 carries and wide receiver Clint Thomas Jr. had five catches for 87 yards and a touchdown.
Defensive lineman Franky Olmedo (Chula Vista High School) had four sacks and defensive back Joshua Ferrara (Grossmont High School) had six tackles and an interception.
Grossmont College defeated West Los Angeles 21-20 in the Beach Bowl in Los Angeles to finish 7-4.
Quarterback Melvin Spicer IV completed 14 of 19 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown and had a rushing touchdown. Running back Darick Dobose Jr. (El Cajon Valley High School) gained 106 yards on 25 carries and had a touchdown. Defensive back Adrien Chargualaf (Lincoln High School) was in on 11 tackles. Defensive tackle Lincoln Chukwuemeka (Crawford High School) had seven tackles and defensive back Titus Toilolo (Madison High School) had six tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.
