Pyrenees Cafe in Old Town Kern is set to host its annual Thanksgiving Eve Basque crawl tonight, a beloved tradition that draws locals and visitors alike. Ron Crawford, owner and manager of Pyrenees Cafe, expressed excitement about the event, noting its growth over the years. “Every year just kind of continues to expand and get bigger, so we try to improve as things go on,” he said.

The event, which kicks off at 5 p.m., is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and community spirit. “Nobody wants to cook the night before Thanksgiving,” Crawford said. “So we have family style. Everybody sits there, comes together, kind of gets re-associated.”

The Basque crawl features a $10 cover fee to help cover costs and promises a night filled with music and celebration. Attendees can expect a variety of food options, including the cafe’s popular pickled cow tongue and cottage cheese. “It’s amazing. It’s tender, it’s delicious,” Crawford said of the tongue dish.

The event has become a staple in the community, with generations of families attending. “It’s generational. Grandparents came here, parents came here,” Crawford adds, stating “It’s a special place, especially for us. We get to be a part of their history.”
