San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said crime is going down in the city. “We have seen crime go down in Union Square 40% and crime city wide is down 30%” he said Wednesday morning. Lurie’s highlighting of crime statistics comes during Dreamforce, San Francisco’s largest conference, drawing thousands from all over the world. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said leading up to the conference, he would like to see the National Guard deployed in San Francisco. President Donald Trump has already deployed troops to Los Angeles and has hinted at sending more to other cities around the country. Lurie did not mention Trump or the National Guard, but he did express strong faith in his law enforcement to maintain law and order, suggesting the National Guard is not needed. “We are going to be relentless in keeping San Franciscans safe,” he said. “Keeping our tourists safe and keeping people who come for conventions safe.” Lurie said he spoke with Benioff over the weekend, and on Wednesday, offered this response to Benioff’s comments: “People are entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts.”SFPD officers could be seen all over the Moscone Center while Dreamforce was in its second day. In other cities around the country, demonstrations are breaking out with people protesting against federal presence. In Chicago, protestors are clashing with ICE agents conducting immigration enforcement. “We know it doesn’t stop at the national guard, it continues with other kinds of enforcement,” said San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “To see tear gas and all the other things that are happening, we don’t want that kind of civil unrest or chaos here. Our job is to keep order, and right now San Franciscans trust us to get that job done.”Lurie also mentioned the police department will get more officers in the months ahead. He thinks that will only increase safety in the city. “We have 20% higher graduation rates from these last few classes of PD, so this message here today is for the people of San Francisco and for those that want to come and enjoy what I believe is the greatest city in the world,” he said.

“Keeping our tourists safe and keeping people who come for conventions safe.”

Lurie said he spoke with Benioff over the weekend, and on Wednesday, offered this response to Benioff’s comments: “People are entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts.”

SFPD officers could be seen all over the Moscone Center while Dreamforce was in its second day.

Our job is to keep order, and right now San Franciscans trust us to get that job done.”

Lurie also mentioned the police department will get more officers in the months ahead. He thinks that will only increase safety in the city.

“We have 20% higher graduation rates from these last few classes of PD, so this message here today is for the people of San Francisco and for those that want to come and enjoy what I believe is the greatest city in the world,” he said.
