SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, shoppers visited Compton’s Market in East Sacramento for last-minute items.
The local grocery store has been a staple of the neighborhood since 1957, now known as one of the only stores with a bar serving alcohol right next to the deli.
” I’ve already been here twice today, love it here, love the bar, thankful they have it,” said Julie Talbert.
As shoppers roll down the aisles looking for the last item on their list, they’re also reflecting on what they’re thankful for this year.
“I’m thankful for our good health and my family…thank God for everything he’s given me,” said Eileen Byers.
It’s not just people buying produce that are thankful.
“You know this year I was thinking about that…just family and my health as well, I’m doing okay, no complaints,” said Delfino Altamira as he checks each Roma tomato.
Altamira is an employee at Compton’s Market who’s taking the day off tomorrow to see family, and his only daughter he hasn’t seen in several years.
“I haven’t seen my daughter in a long time. I get to see her this Thanksgiving,” said Altamira.
Shoppers say Thanksgiving is about much more than food or perfecting a turkey recipe. For some, it’s a time to remember what’s truly important, cherishing the ones we love.
