FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Neither Ashley Nabors nor Benjamin Bryant could keep from checking the time as they spoke with Action News on Wednesday morning. The couple was counting down the minutes until they could leave their small hospital room to head up to Community Regional Medical Center’s NICU wing, where their three newborn daughters were waiting for them.
“I had said I wanted babies on Thanksgiving, so they came right before. Our three little turkeys. So, we’re definitely thankful,” said Ashley.
Although the couple couldn’t be happier after welcoming their fraternal triplets into the world, they said the journey was terrifying. Neither of them even realized Ashley was pregnant until she started having horrible pain that landed her in the hospital about six months ago.
“We looked at each other, and we were like, ‘Is there a baby in there?’ And the ultrasound tech was like, ‘Oh yeah… Actually, there’s two,” Ashley told Action News.
“Five seconds later… ‘Actually, there’s three,'” added Benjamin, saying he was as white as a sheet when the reality sank in.
Doctors at CRMC said that although it’s not always the case, sets of triplets are born prematurely “most of the time.” This was the case for Ashley and Benjamin, with their smallest daughter weighing in at around two and a half pounds.
For that reason, the pair said they decided to travel all the way out to Fresno from their home in the Madera County mountains to ensure their daughters got the best care possible. CRMC is the largest hospital in the entire Central Valley, and officials said for that reason, most high-risk pregnancy cases in the region are sent there.
But Benjamin said after seeing the way the medical staff cared for Ashley and their girls, his fears were put to rest — making room for all the fears every parent faces. Although Benjamin was hoping for at least one boy, he fell in love with his daughters the moment he saw them. And now, he’s even more motivated to share his passions with them.
“Kickboxing, martial arts…” he said, as Ashley added, “Yeah, they’re going to know how to protect themselves. And then he says, you know, they can’t date ’til they graduate… and that means college.”
Mom and Dad said they’ll just have to take it one step at a time, while remembering the fear they felt just a few months ago brought them triple the joy that they never before imagined.
“We just took it day by day. Every day, we were like, just, whatever comes, you just got to make it be little milestones,” said Ashley, “I just hope that they are healthy and strong and that, you know, obviously they’re going to be beautiful.”
