SACRAMENTO, Calif. — After days of delays and confusion, Imaginarium at Cal Expo is finally open.
Families streamed through the gates Wednesday night, taking in the massive holiday light show after the event sat closed for five days because of an electrical problem. Organizers said damaged electrical panels had to be replaced and re-inspected before the show could open.
Visitors were quick to jump back into the holiday tradition.
“I like it. It’s really lit up. It’s fun thing for the kids. There’s a lot to do, especially for him to see,” said visitor Dakota Riggs.
The annual event returned with more than 15 million lights, circus acts and rides across Cal Expo. Organizers said they were “good to go” as they kicked off the 14th annual Imaginarium.
But Wednesday brought another round of confusion when social media posts announcing the opening were briefly published, pulled and then reposted confirming the event was indeed opening.
“Refunds are offered on a case-by-case basis. If a person cannot absolutely make this year, of course we take that into consideration,” said Imaginarium spokesperson Darla Givens.
People holding tickets from the delayed dates will receive a new date and an extra free ticket.
For many families, the show is a yearly ritual.
“He loves the light so he loves the light so he loves looking at all of them and all the cool things and the microphone I guess,” Riggs said.
Some bring their own lights to add to the experience.
“It has 200 different settings and it also goes to sound, goes to music if you want to set it on that,” said visitor James Bryant, who wore a long jacket with lights draped across it. “I love this jacket. It’s the best money I have ever spent.”
Officials said they are confident the electrical issues are resolved. Imaginarium will be closed Thursday for Thanksgiving but will run nightly through Jan. 4.
