The Aztecs had everything in their control. A win at New Mexico would ensure the Mountain West Conference Championship Game would be played at Snapdragon Stadium, a building where SDSU hasn’t lost all year. Alas, finding success on the road has been a tough task for the Aztecs.
San Diego State suffered a heartbreaking 23-17 double overtime loss to the Lobos, putting their spot in the MWC title tilt at all in jeopardy.
SDSU dug themselves an early hole when Lobos running back James Laubstein ripped off a 40-yard TD run to give UNM a 10-0 lead. The Aztecs offense snapped to life on their next possession. Christian Washington rumbled for 29 yards to set up Lucky Sutton for a 1-yard TD plunge to cut the lead to 10-7.
The Aztecs defense forced a three-and-out and their offense executed a perfect four-minute offense. Quarterback Jayden Denegal hit Donovan Brown for a 46-yard touchdown with less than a minute on the clock and sending SDSU to the break up 14-10.
New Mexico took the lead back on a 54-yard TD run by D.J. McKinney and SDSU leveled the score 17-17 on a 44-yard Gabriel Plascencia field goal. After that, both offenses dried up. Each team punted three times and the clock ran out on the Lobos, sending the game to OT.
That’s when the drama really began.
Disaster struck on the first play. Denegal’s pass was tipped by Brown and intercepted by safety Austin Brawley, meaning the Lobos only needed a field goal to win. They tried to get a touchdown instead. Laubstein was a couple of yards from the goal line when Dwayne McDougle punched the ball out and SDSU recovered the fumble, giving them new life.
UNM scored when Jack Layne hit Cade Keith for a 25-yard touchdown but in the second OT teams have to go for two. So when the Lobos were called for a holding penalty they were forced to try and score from the 12. Layne’s pass fell incomplete, giving the Aztecs one more opening.
Denegal scrambled to the 10 yard line but an SDSU team that’s played relatively clean football all year long fell apart. A pair of false starts and an illegal snap pushed the Aztecs back to a 1st and goal from the 25 yard line. Denegal was sacked on two straight plays, setting up a 4th and goal from the UNM 30 yard line. Denegal’s pass sailed through the back of the end zone, giving the Lobos a win and making Aztecs fans very nervous.
The Aztecs can still play in the MWC championship game but will need some help. Either UNLV has to lose to Nevada or, if the Rebels beat the Wolfpack, San Diego State has to hope the computer metrics favor them in a tiebreaker.
