ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The UNM Lobos have capped off a historic regular season with a win over the San Diego State Aztecs. The 23-17 victory comes with a 9-3 record and the potential for the Lobos to play for their first Mountain West Conference Championship depending on conference tiebreakers.

Lobo Nation showed up for their team at the big game with a total attendance over 30,500.

One fan told us seeing football come back to life in the city “brings life back to the to Albuquerque. I mean, we’ve been a basketball team for so long that it, it’s just good to be a part of something that’s it’s special for the town.”

The team had over 70 new players on the roster coming into this season, lead by new Head Coach Jason Eck and a new coaching staff. As the team has shattered records on the field, fans have broken glass ceilings in the stands with the largest attendance increase in FBS this season at 51.2%.

“Just to be here and see the fans excited and wanting to be here, it’s like a top 10 collegiate game. It’s just amazing the feeling now,” a fan told us.

As each generation experiences a dreamy winning season on the gridiron, gratitude is felt through each Lobos heart.

“My family’s been here since forever, and they said that they’ve never seen the Lobos win anything. So now that my generation is going to get to watch them hopefully win a championship, it’s incredible,” one UNM student told us.

There is still a chance the Lobos will get the bid to play in the conference championship. Regular season games wrap up tomorrow and we will learn more after that. Bowl game announcements are set for Sunday, December 7th.
