WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – The Los Angeles Rams on Friday waived kicker Joshua Karty.
Karty, 23, was L.A.’s kicker for the entire 2024 season and for the first eight games of this season before Harrison Mevis won the competition for the job in Week 10.
McVay on Friday praised Karty’s progress made behind the scenes, and attributed the move to a roster numbers crunch impacted by the health of the team.
‘Honestly, it wasn’t something that we wanted to be able to do,” McVay explained. “We always had the intention of being able to keep two kickers, (but) that was contingent upon the health of our roster. What went into it had nothing to do with – Josh has done a great job. I think there’s been a lot of growth that’s gone on that hasn’t been seen by you guys or others, in terms of the way he’s gone about his weekly rhythm. What a good job he’s done of making a couple little tweaks, and the way he’s handled it says as much as anything about who he is. And I think his future is going to be really bright, but it’s a long-winded way of saying it was just roster management, because you end up putting as many guys on IR, gotten a little bit banged up at the DB position, obviously, you put (offensive lineman) Rob (Havenstein) and (tight end Tyler) Higbee (on IR), (and) with what you want to do with the tight ends on the back end, and really just kind of projecting and thinking about your overall 48 and 53, it was just exclusively a numbers thing that it’s just hard to keep two kickers with some of the things that have come up.”
In those eight games, Karty made 10 of 15 field goal attempts and 23 of 26 extra point attempts. He made 39 of 49 field goal attempts and 55 of 62 extra point attempts overall across 25 regular season games with the Rams.
McVay said the team would like to bring Karty back on the practice squad to continue his development if he ends up clearing waivers.
“I want to see what’s best for Josh, first and foremost, even if that doesn’t necessarily suit the Rams, because of the appreciation I have for the human being,” McVay said. “But I’m certainly hopeful that the journey does continue with us in that capacity, if that’s something that works out for us.”
