Nick Canepa grades the Chargers following Sunday’s 31-14 win over the Raiders at SoFi Stadoum:
Quarterbacks: B
On Jim Harbaugh’s orders, Justin Herbert handed off a lot on the opening 14-play, 74-yard drive that went on for 8:46. It concluded with a TD pass. But Herbert went into the locker room after the first series with a left hand injury. He was replaced by Tre Lance, but returned with his hand gloved after missing a series — and threw a bad end-zone pick. He toughed it out.
Running backs: A
Top rookie Omarion Hampton (ankle) was supposed to be activated but sat it out. So Kamani Vidal got the start and as usual ran hard and effectively, especially on a 59-yard sweep for a score to open the second half. Jaret Patterson was his replacement. Sparingly, but he had a nice 23-yard run and a short TD run.
Receivers: B
Keenan Allen, the best at it, just keeps catching third-down passes for first downs. Quentin Johnston caught the first TD pass, a 10-yarder. Oronde Gadsden had a big 28-yarder to the two (from Herbert). Ladd McConkey’s first catch came 29 minutes in, but he caught a short TD pass to put his side up by two TDs. Tre Harris had a few big catches.
Offensive line: A-
Jamaree Salyer started at left tackle, where he has played pretty well in the past. Tre “Windmill” Pipkins whiffed on a sack by Maxx Crosby, then on another. Salyer threw a block that sprung Vidal. Herbert was sacked three times, but mostly he had enough time.
Defensive line: A
Teair Tart can play. Da’Shawn Hand had a half sack and batted down a pass. Vegas couldn’t run.
Linebackers: A-
Tuli Tulipulotu batted down the first pass. Khalil Mack shared a sack on the second pass with Da’Shawn Hand. Tuli had a big second sack later on, then another, followed by a game-changing TFL. Denzel Perryman can tackle but he never could cover. Bud Dupree had a nice tackle and a sack. Daiyan Henley had a gimmee sack.
Secondary: B
Derwin James had a huge third-down sack to stop a Raiders drive. Ageless local safety Tony Jefferson had a great sideline pick off a Dontae Jackson tip, but it amounted to nothing. Cam Hart lost Brock Bowers, which is easy to do, as Brock proved on a wide open TD. How can you not cover the guy?
Special teams; Incomplete
Outside of the kickers, teams have done little this year to improve this football team. Cameron Dicker The Kicker had a 56-yard FG.
Coaching: B-
Harbaugh had the ball on the two and, with Herbert hurt, should have run it four times. He also failed to run it on fourth-and-short. Ever think of doubling Bowers? But when Jim can run the ball, he wins.
Next opportunity — vs. Philadelphia: D
A Monday night game. The Eagles played and got eaten by the Bears Friday. The defending champs are not nearly as good as they were last year, but they basically have a mini bye, which helps on the trip west. There’s a manpower issue here.
