Tucked into the foothills of Altadena, there’s a stretch of road that transforms every December into something out of a winter fairytale. Christmas Tree Lane is “the oldest large-scale outdoor Christmas display in the world” with a mile-long corridor of towering deodar cedars that glow with thousands of twinkling lights.
Planted in the 1880s for a grand estate that was never built, these trees have instead become the backbone of one of the nation’s oldest holiday traditions. It’s been lighting up hearts with holiday cheer since 1920.
🎄 Annual Lighting Ceremony
The Lighting Ceremony marks the official kickoff to the Christmas Tree Lane season and launches a month of holiday magic beneath Altadena’s iconic trees.
Expect a full community celebration, complete with:
Live performances by local choirs, marching bands, and musicians Special guests and community speakers A visit from Santa Claus The lighting of over 10,000 twinkling lights
Together, the crowd will count down to the moment the entire mile of deodars bursts into a warm, festive glow.
🎄A Community-Powered Holiday Tradition
Behind every twinkling bulb is the dedication of the all-volunteer Christmas Tree Lane Association. This team spends months maintaining the century-old deodar trees and stringing lights by hand, preserving a tradition that has illuminated Altadena for generations. Their work keeps the Lane glowing year after year—not just lighting a street, but igniting a sense of community and continuity that defines the season.
