BAKERSFIELD, Calif/ (KBAK/KBFX) Sen. Melissa Hurtado has outlined her priorities for 2026, focusing on reducing the rising cost of living for families.
“I think 2026 for me will be to ensure that we reduce the cost for individuals when it comes to food, when it comes to rent,” she said. A key component of her plan is the California Preventing Algorithmic Collusion Act, a bill she introduced in 2025 that failed to pass.

Hurtado emphasized the importance of addressing algorithm-driven price fixing, stating, “It’s a huge and massive issue.”
In February, Hurtado highlighted the impact of algorithms on prices, saying, “For years, Californians have been robbed by faceless corporations hiding behind technology. These algorithms are the culprits behind skyrocketing prices for basic needs like rent and groceries.”

Hurtado explained that traditional price fixing involved businesses colluding in person, but now, “you no longer need to be in a room; you have an algorithm.”
However, the bill may face federal opposition.
President Trump has drafted an executive order challenging states’ ability to regulate AI, directing Attorney General Pam Bondi to form a task force targeting state AI legislation.

Hurtado stressed, “This shouldn’t be a Democrat or Republican issue – this is a people issue.”
