Caution to holiday travelers! Wet soils and a stable and windless weather pattern are resulting in continued widespread fog.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Weather conditions forecast for the Sacramento region on Wednesday and Thursday are just more of the same: fog.

Dense fog will be most problematic in the morning hours through the valley, the Delta, and the East Bay Area.

In the valley, visibility will change frequently, especially along Interstate 5 and Highway 99, as well as in the lower foothills.

Thanksgiving travelers, especially those headed up or down the valley, are encouraged to use caution, as fog is expected to significantly impact driving on both I-5 and CA-99!

When

Both Wednesday and Thursday. The thickest and most widespread fog will occur during the morning period before sunrise and into mid-morning; however, dense fog could linger in pockets through the early afternoon.

This is just a continuation of the weather pattern we’ve had since late last week. Tule Fog is here to stay through the Thanksgiving holiday.

Impact

Holiday travel by car through the valley is likely to be greatly impacted. North/south valley travel on I-5 and CA-99 will be tough at times, especially in the morning.

Expect difficult driving conditions. With many folks expected to get on the roads for Thanksgiving, the dense fog becomes more of a problem and more disruptive than just a drive to work.

Need

The biggest need is just to drive with safety in mind. Don’t rush. The most important part of your travel is to arrive at your destination safely. Speed is dangerous in the best of conditions, but can become extremely dangerous in fog. Be sure to also give yourself extra space between you and other cars on the road.

Drivers should also avoid using the high beams (or bright lights) in the fog. Not only is it not helpful, but modern white LED lights are less effective in foggy conditions than the older amber halogens. The white light scatters more off the water droplets in the fog than the amber light does, making it harder for everyone to see. Keep the high beams off unless absolutely necessary.

Driving in the fog is all about using patience. You won’t get anywhere quickly, and you can’t see any better than anyone else on the road. Take your time and arrive safely.
