Eureka, CA – Calm waters will turn dangerous Friday evening as sneaker waves roll into Northwest California, threatening coastal safety through Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties beginning Friday evening. A northwest swell will bring large, unexpected waves capable of surging far beyond the shoreline—especially near rocks, jetties, and beaches along Highway 101.
Swimmers, beachgoers, and anglers are urged to avoid steep beaches and rocky outcrops, where waves can sweep people into the ocean with no warning. Logs and debris may also shift dangerously. Officials stress: never turn your back to the ocean, and stay well back from the water’s edge.
Despite the coastal hazards, inland weather will feel seasonably pleasant. Eureka will warm to the low 60s by Saturday under sunny skies after patchy morning fog. Winds will stay light out of the northwest. Saturday night turns partly cloudy, with Sunday bringing increased cloud cover and a 40% chance of showers by the afternoon.
Outdoor plans are best made for Saturday, especially for fall hikes, pumpkin patches, or coastal drives. Sunday will feel cooler and damp, with light showers possible into the evening hours.
Five-Day Weather Outlook for Eureka, CA:

Sunday: Chance of showers after 11 a.m., high near 58°F
