FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A man is still on the loose after Fresno Police say he shot at his Uber driver on Thanksgiving night.

Investigators say 24-year-old Maurice Session and a woman got into an Uber near George and Tupman in Southwest Fresno around 8 p.m. that night.

“As both of them got into the car, there was an argument that occurred and during that time, the male slapped the driver one time,” Fresno Police Lt. Bowlan stated.

The 40-year-old driver then told Session and the woman to get out of the car, threatened to call the police and began to drive away; that’s when police say Session shot at the victim and his vehicle.

“One of those rounds penetrated the vehicle and actually caused a graze wound on his head,” Lt. Bowlan explained.

The victim was treated and released from the hospital.

He’s expected to be okay, while the suspect remains at large.

Session faces an assault with a deadly weapon charge for this incident and has prior felonies on his record.

“There was a domestic violence incident before and one weapons possession charge before but for us, it shows he is still armed and dangerous,” Lt. Bowlan said.

This incident has put the community on edge, especially rideshare drivers like Vikaas Shanker, who’s been an Uber driver for about 10 years.

“When I read this story, it was immediate shock that could’ve been me” Shanker stated.

Shanker told Action News on Friday that the app protects its drivers with emergency capabilities but hopes more is done.

“There needs to be better vetting of the riders who come in,” Shanker said.

Fresno Police suggest rideshare drivers get a dashcam that could deter violence.

Uber and Lyft driver John Heffron has done just that.

“It’s thought that maybe a passenger would see that he’s on video and maybe will behave himself if he’s thinking otherwise,” Heffron stated.

Police say the victim did have a dashcam, which they are reviewing.

The woman in this incident is not considered a suspect at this time.

Anyone with information on Session’s whereabouts is asked to contact Fresno Police or Crime Stoppers.
