State and federal law enforcement officials serving a search warrant at an apartment building in Southcrest on Tuesday reported finding human remains in the yard, investigators said.
The remains were found as part of a joint operation by California Highway Patrol officers and FBI agents at a three-unit property on Newton Avenue just north of Interstate 5, investigators said.
Due to the jurisdiction of the investigation, the case is being handled by the San Diego Police Department’s Cold Case/Missing Persons unit and the District Attorney’s Office, police Lt. Travis Easter said.
Easter said CHP investigators had developed information leading them to believe a body was at the property, but the investigators did not provide further details about the case.
The identity and cause of death will be released by the county Medical Examiner’s Office, Easter said.
The property is listed on homes.com as a two-story complex on a 6,729-square-foot lot that was last sold in June 2023 as part of a probate case.
