RICHMOND, CA — Police have released a photo of a “person of interest” in the killing of a 23-year-old man in Richmond last month.
It’s unclear whether the person is considered a suspect or a witness to the shooting at this time; however, police say they are wanted for questioning in the fatal shooting of Josue Cornejo the morning of Nov. 17.
Cornejo’s family told Patch that he appeared to have gone out for a walk that morning and was on his way home when someone shot him several times in the 1400 block of Bissell Avenue. Cornejo died at the scene, the Richmond Police Department said.
A motive for the shooting has not been released. However, Cornejo’s family believes whoever shot him may have been trying to rob him.
“We need to find the murderer of Josue Cornejo,” Glenda Luarca, a longtime friend of the Cornejo family, previously told Patch. “We ask the authorities not to stop the investigation until they find the murderer who is responsible, who cruelly took Josue Cornejo’s life away.”
“Your tip could help us solve this murder,” police said.
Cornejo’s family, meanwhile, is still raising funds to help pay for the 23-year-old’s funeral costs. Their GoFundMe has raised $9,440 out of its $24,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.
“The only thing we ask everyone who is watching us, that if their heart desires it, they help us by contributing even a speck of sand,” Cornejo’s stepfather, Luis Romero, said. “We’d be grateful with all of our hearts, and God will bless them with double.”
