(FOX40.COM) –A former Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office deputy accused of murdering his 11-year-old son is dead after a police chase on I-5 on Tuesday morning.

Marvin Morales, 40, was formerly employed as a deputy sheriff but was terminated in February 2024 after an on-duty fentanyl overdose. He was revived by fellow officers through Narcan before being seperated from the department.

Around 8 a.m., the Elk Grove Police Department responded to a homicide on the 7600 block of Ferrell Way in Elk Grove. The mother of an 11-year-old boy was at work when she saw her son lying on the ground unresponsive on home surveillance video, according to EGPD.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered that the boy had been stabbed multiple times. EGPD said he was taken to a local hospital, where he died. A six-year-old girl was also in the home but unharmed.

Northern California deputy fired after fentanyl overdose, investigation reveals

The suspect was identified by law enforcement as the child’s father, Morales. EGPD worked with SCSO and other law enforcement agencies to find him. Sheriff Jim Cooper reportedly observed the Morales’ vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 5 near Pocket Road and immediately alerted dispatch. According to SCSO, several law enforcement agencies attempted to pull him over, but he fled.

Deputies said that Morales led them on a chase that ended in San Joaquin County near Interstate 5 and Highway 12, where an officer-involved shooting ensued. Two SCSO deputies and other officers from different agencies fired at Morales.

According to SCSO, Morales was struck and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported, and the incident remains under investigation.
