LONG BEACH, Miss. (WLOX) – Long Beach is moving forward with plans to ease congestion at one of its busiest intersections.
During a special meeting on Wednesday, city leaders discussed adding a turning lane at the intersection of East Railroad Street and Jeff Davis Avenue.
The new design will create three lanes at the stop sign — one for drivers waiting to cross the tracks, and two for those continuing east or west.

Officials said the change should help reduce major backups, especially during train crossings or rush hour.
“Things are happening in Long Beach, and I appreciate everyone’s patience because progress is sometimes a little bit painful,” said Mayor Tim Pierce. “Everything we do is for the long term, and we are moving Long Beach forward.”
Pierce said a new design is needed because the current traffic pattern causes major delays.
“Traffic just backs up for blocks, and so what this will allow is for traffic to pull into the third lane and allow the east-west traffic to continue,” said Pierce.
There is no official start date for the project, but city officials expect it to be completed within the year.
