Olivia Nuzzi, the former New York Magazine reporter who was involved in an emotional affair with then presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr., admitted that she had “f— up.”

Nuzzi sat down for an hour long interview with the Bulwark’s Tim Miller in which she admitted to having broken journalistic ethics by engaging in a romantic relationship with Kennedy. Nuzzi had reportedly only met Kennedy in-person once for an interview. The pair’s affair was strictly carried out through texts and phone calls. Nuzzi had offered Kennedy campaign advice, ranging from giving her opinion on his outfits to which interviews Kennedy should partake in.

“I had f—ed up,” Nuzzi told Miller. “I did something wrong. Those ethics rules exist for a reason. They’re very good rules, and I had violated that.”

The release of Nuzzi’s interview with Miller comes the same day as her memoir “American Canto” was released which is centered around Nuzzi’s affair with Kennedy during the 2024 presidential cycle. The book has received negative reviews by the New York Times and The Washington Post.

Nuzzi expressed that she should have displayed more shame when the scandal first came to light last year.

“There were a lot of people telling me, ‘Oh, just keep going. Cover [until] the end of the election and take some other assignment. Be shameless because everyone else involved is shameless and you should be shameless too,’” Nuzzi said.

“I think shame is very important.”

Nuzzi was terminated from New York Magazine. However, the publication discovered “no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias” in Nuzzi’s work. Nuzzi is currently employed with Variety; however, the publication is currently conducting an investigation into allegations that Nuzzi was also in a romantic relationship with former South Carolina representative Mark Sanford.

These allegations were made by Nuzzi’s ex-fiance Ryan Lizza last month.

Kennedy, who now serves as the Health and Human Services Secretary, is married to actress Cheryl Hines. He has long denied the affair.
