California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday announced an online portal for Californians to report “potentially unlawful” activity by federal agents. The online form allows people to submit videos or photographs of suspected misconduct by agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, or federalized National Guard troops. Bonta said in a statement that federal agents “can enforce federal laws, and no one should interfere with them doing their job. But federal agents must also do so lawfully and in compliance with the Constitution.”The portal cites as examples of unlawful activity the use of excessive force, voting interference or intimidation, wrongful detentions, warrantless searches or civil rights violations. In a press release, Bonta’s office said the portal will help California’s DOJ create a record of potential unlawful conduct to inform actions the department may take. Still, the office won’t necessarily take action over individual complaints and can’t represent private individuals or provide legal advice. Bonta’s office suggests that people who are victims or witnesses to a crime contact their local police department and consider finding legal assistance through the State Bar or a local legal aid office. Asked to comment on the portal, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson referred to Newsom by President Donald Trump’s pejorative nickname and said the governor and the state of California “should be more concerned with the dangerous criminal illegal aliens they’ve allowed to invade American communities, rather than attacking law enforcement officers.” The statement went on to claim that ICE officers are facing a “1000% increase in assaults against them because of dangerous, untrue smears from elected Democrats.” “ICE officers act heroically to enforce the law and protect American communities with the utmost professionalism,” Jackson said. “Anyone pointing the finger at law enforcement officers instead of the criminals are simply doing the bidding of criminal illegal aliens.”KCRA 3 asked for more information and context about the assault statistic in response to reports by the Los Angeles Times and NPR that analyzed court records and found increases closer to 26%. U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli responded to news of the portal by sharing the FBI’s tips portal, saying, “People can report California state officials engaged in illegal activity.”See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel
