Supermoon rises across Northern California this week. When to see it

HERE. LET’S GET OVER TO METEOROLOGIST OPHELIA YOUNG LOVE SEEING THE SUN OPHELIA YOUNG YES, BUT WE DO HAVE TO DEAL WITH A LITTLE WIND. AFTER THE WIND CALMS DOWN, WE COULD DEAL WITH SUNNIER AND WARMER DAYS. AS FOR RIGHT NOW, AT THIS MOMENT, THERE’S STILL SOME CLOUDS IN THE SKIES, BUT THEY ARE SITTING A LITTLE HIGHER IN THE ATMOSPHERE AND WE’RE GETTING SOME BREAKS OF SUN THROUGH THEM. SO ALTOGETHER, A NICE DAY IN THE CLOUDS CONTINUE TO CLEAR THIS WEEK, JUST IN TIME FOR THE FULL MOON TOMORROW. IT IS CALLED THE COLD MOON. IT WILL BE OUR LAST SUPERMOON OF THE YEAR. IT COMES UP TOMORROW AFTERNOON AT 314, BUT WE’LL SEE IT WELL INTO THE EVENING. AND THAT IS BECAUSE SKIES WILL BE MOSTLY CLEAR, ESPECIALLY AFTER 10:00 WHEN SKY COVER DROPS DOWN TO 25%. THAT MEANS JUST A FEW CLOUDS SAILING OVERHEAD, AND WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE A BIG, BRIGHT MOON IN THE SKY. CURRENTLY, THE WINDS COMING OUT OF THE NORTH. THAT’S WHAT’S WORKING TO DRY OUT OUR AIR, PUSH THE CLOUDS FURTHER SOUTH. AND RIGHT NOW THE WINDS ARE 10 TO 20MPH SUSTAINED. IT’S BEEN BREEZY. MORNING IN YUBA CITY, SACRAMENTO AND FAIRFIELD AS THOSE WINDS FUNNEL OFF THE MOUNTAIN THROUGH THE VALLEY AND THEN THROUGH THE DELTA OUT TO THE PACIFIC. BUT, BOY, TAKE A LOOK AT THE TEMPERATURE HIKE THAT IT’S BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR. WE ARE ABOUT TEN DEGREES WARMER THAN THIS TIME YESTERDAY, SO FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MORE THAN A WEEK, SACRAMENTO’S AIRPORT THERMOMETER HAS HIT 60 DEGREES. YUBA CITY, ALSO AT 60. BUT YOU’LL NOTICE THAT IN SPOTS WHERE THE WINDS ARE NOT AS STRONG, TEMPERATURES ARE A LITTLE LOWER. MODESTO BY CONTRAST, AT ABOUT 50, WE’RE GOING TO ADD A FEW MORE DEGREES TO OURS. 63 WILL BE THE FORECAST HIGH. IT WILL BE ANOTHER COOL EVENING AS TEMPERATURES DROP INTO THE 40S AFTER DINNERTIME, WINDS COMING OUT OF THE NORTH AS A SYSTEM DROPS DOWN THE INTERMOUNTAIN WEST. HIGH PRESSURE PRESSES UP BEHIND IT. AND AS WE SIT RIGHT IN BETWEEN THOSE TWO WEATHER SYSTEM, WE HAVE WINDS FUNNELING OUT OF THE NORTH. THE WINDS, GOOD NEWS, ARE ON THEIR WAY OUT. BY DINNERTIME, WILL FIND OURSELVES MUCH CALMER CONDITIONS. BUT THEN HIGH PRESSURE MOVES IN AND THEN TEMPERATURES WILL WARM BY A FEW DEGREES THIS WEEK. THIS WEEKEND WE’RE LOOKING AT HIGHS THAT WILL STAY IN THE LOW 60S ALL THE WAY THROUGH NEXT WEEK. SO ALL TOGETHER REAL NICE SEVEN DAY. AND WE CAN THANK TODAY’S WINDS FOR IT. WE’RE GOING TO HOVER AROUND 60 DEGREES NOT JUST THROUGH THE REST OF THIS WEEK, NOT JUST THROUGH THE WEEKEND, BUT ALSO MONDAY AND TUESDAY AS WELL. IN FACT, I’M NOT SEEING BUSY WEATHER RETURN TO THE REGION UNTIL THE END OF NEXT WEEK. CHANCE FOR RAIN MAY BE ON FRIDAY, BUT UP UNTIL THE

The full cold moon rises on Thursday, Dec. 4. This full moon also marks the final supermoon of 2025.Across Northern California, the skies may allow us the chance to see it on Thursday. If heavy fog doesn’t set up in the Valley, then viewing should be mostly clear. This will be the third supermoon this year. Previous supermoons occurred in October and November. A supermoon is when the moon reaches perigee. This means it’s closest to the Earth. It gives the appearance of shining bigger and brighter. Sometimes it can look 14% bigger and 30% brighter on the horizon. In Northern California, the moon officially peaks at 3:14 p.m. on Thursday. However, it will remain nearly illuminated to its peak into Thursday evening. For the best viewing, look to the Eastern sky and away from city lights. If you have a telescope, this is a great time to use it to see all of the moon features.
