San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, in collaboration with the Burn Institute and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, will join over 250 burn survivors, family members, firefighters and community leaders for a holiday celebration this weekend.
The celebration, which aims to lift the spirits of burn survivors and their families, will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Fire-Rescue Station 45 at 9366 Friars Road in San Diego, for a day of “joy, connection and seasonal festivities,” according to event organizers.
At 11:45 a.m., Santa is scheduled to make a grand entrance on a fire department engine. Firefighters and volunteers will also be serving a barbecue lunch followed by holiday-themed crafts and activities.
“The holiday party is central to our mission — to provide ongoing support, community, and connection for burn survivors and their families,” Burn Institute Executive Director Peter Callstrom said in a statement.
Gloria and SD Fire-Rescue Chief Robert Logan are expected to speak at the event.
Since 1972, the Burn Institute has helped burn survivors and their families cope with the psychological and physical effects of their injuries.
