Roaming the Melrose Trading Post on pretty much any Sunday of the year is going to be an adventure: Mid-century tableware, vintage cowboy chaps, and a quirky dessert cookbook from 1932 might be some of the fabulous finds you come across, all in a single row or even booth.
But December is even more, well, more at the longtime shopping stalwart, a colorful staple that’s held court at the southeast corner of Melrose and Fairfax Avenues for nearly 30 years.
Over four December Sundays, starting Dec. 7, the panache-packed post will host all sorts of holiday goings-on, gewgaws, and glad tidings, with an appearance by Rock ‘n Roll Santa, a pet adoption, a toy drive, and caroling adding to the always pervasive and ever-present air of cheer.
Typewriter poets will be on-hand, too, all to deliver clever poems inspired by the touchstones of the sweetest (and sometimes stress-iest) season.
But let no stress cloud your Merry Melrose visit: The four December Sundays will have an excess of cheer, and goodwill to spare: “All proceeds support arts education at Fairfax High School through Greenway Arts Alliance,” share organizers. “So every gift does double duty.”
The name of this cool Christmassy affair? Why Merry Melrose, of course.
The shopping is sublime and singular, too, which means you may wrap up your list by browsing the 260-plus vendors. Hats, scarves, toys, vases, books, and you-name-its line the eye-catching aisles.
Adding to the spirit in the air? This is an open-air marketplace, so prepare to soak up some sunshine as you shop.
Each Sunday will offer something a little different, so be sure to check the Merry Melrose schedule before making your way to Fairfax High.
