A man was killed early Sunday in Long Beach after police say he was intentionally struck by a driver following a verbal dispute, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Officers were called to the 1700 block of Newport Avenue around 1:47 a.m. on Dec. 7 for what was initially reported as a traffic collision, police said. When they arrived, they found an unconscious man lying in the roadway. Officers administered medical aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel took over, but the man died at the scene.

Homicide detectives were brought in after the preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and the driver had argued shortly before the collision. According to LBPD, the victim then walked across Newport Avenue outside the crosswalk, heading east to west. While the man was on the road, the driver of a dark four-door sedan allegedly accelerated toward him, striking him before fleeing southbound on Newport Avenue and then west on Wilton Street.

Through their investigation, detectives identified the suspected driver as Isai Solis, a 28-year-old Lynwood resident. Special Investigation Detectives located and arrested Solis later that same day in the 12400 block of Sante Fe Avenue in Lynwood. He was booked on suspicion of murder, and his bail was set at $2 million.
