Police in South San Francisco shot and critically wounded a man who allegedly came at them with a knife early Monday morning.

Authorities were alerted about 5:10 a.m. about a man who was reportedly under the influence, armed with a knife and making suicidal statements in the 900 block of Sandra Court.

When officers arrived, they spoke with the person who had called and the man came outside the home, according to a release from the South San Francisco Police Department.

When officers spoke with him to de-escalate the situation, he initially complied and approached them.

The man then allegedly brandished a knife and officers used a taser, ordering him to drop the knife.

“The taser was ineffective, and the subject ignored further commands before advancing at officers,” Cpl. Brian Blake said in a release.

After more commands, the man allegedly charged at the officers with knife raised.

Two officers fired at him and he was hit. They gave him lifesaving aid and he was transported to a local trauma center, where he remained in critical condition on Monday morning, Blake said.

The investigation into the man’s actions is being conducted by the South San Francisco Police Detective Bureau. The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office is conducting the officer-involved shooting investigation.
