BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) The Kern County High School District’s recent resolution supporting fairness in women’s sports has sparked controversy, leading to a recall effort against two board members.
The resolution, passed in August with a narrow three-to-two vote, aligns with the Trump administration’s stance but contradicts California law, which allows transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.

During a Monday night meeting, community member Penny Lepisto submitted a notice to recall board members David Manriquez and Steven Rodrigue.
“My reasoning for the recall is that they voted to allow biological boys to play in girls’ sports. That’s one of the main reasons. That was the tip off. That was the icing on the cake for the recall,” Lepisto said.

She claims significant community support, stating, “It was very easy to get the signatures I needed to get this moving forward.”

Reverend Angelo Frazier, another meeting attendee, echoed Lepisto’s sentiments, saying, “Boys in girls’ sports? No. This doesn’t require a lot of meditation. This is obvious.”
