FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Deep sadness and heartfelt tears poured out inside of Cornerstone Community Church on Thursday morning.
“It doesn’t get easier and it’s always heartbreaking,” said Lt. Daniel Denny.
Fallen Chowchilla Police officer Raymond Barrantes was honored and laid to rest after his life was cut short in a deadly crash while on duty on October 3rd.

A difficult phone call for Chief Jeff Palmer.
“Myself, when I arrived on scene and seeing that uniform of mine, mixed with what happens on a traffic scene, on his uniform, is a moment I will never forget,” said Chowchilla Chief Jeff Palmer.
Palmer shared the long list of accomplishments Barrantes earned in his 15-year-long career.
The 37-year-old had just started in Chowchilla this year.
Palmer says that for Barrantes, serving and protecting was in his blood on and off the clock.
“Every conversation he and I had went right back to his kids. He always talked about the success of his children,” said Palmer.
Barrantes leaves behind three children who stood strong as they shared memories of their dad and the role model he was every single day.
“He always made it clear that I could be and do anything I put my heart towards. He believed in me when I couldn’t even believe in myself,” said Barrantes older daughter.
Barrantes’ brother spoke on behalf of the family, bringing laughter amid the tears.
“He would always joke with my mom that if she would just pay for pills to get taller or have a stretching surgery, he would make it to the major leagues and pay her back. That was Raymond. Always joking,” said Edson Barrantes.
After the service, multiple law enforcement agencies from across the state turned on their lights and made their way to the Dos Palos Cemetery, where his family and friends said their final goodbyes.
Barrantes is the first Chowchilla police officer to die in the line of duty.
