Police announced Wednesday that 16 individuals were detained in Anaheim, where a suspect was shot and killed by officers and another person was struck by a non-lethal round.
Two officers from the Anaheim Police Department’s Gang Enforcement Unit were on patrol when they contacted several people in front of a residence in the 800 block of South Philadelphia Street at 9:32 p.m. Saturday, Sgt. Matt Sutter said.
The location is a few blocks east of Anaheim Boulevard, near the Anaheim Packing District.
“During the encounter, a confrontation occurred, leading to an officer-involved shooting,” police said. “A male adult was struck by gunfire and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A firearm was located at the scene.”
The victim, who was said to be about 19 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The confrontation and shooting triggered an unruly crowd, and at least a dozen people were detained. One person was struck by a non-lethal round during the confrontation and taken to a hospital as a precaution, police added.
“The officers involved in the initial shooting incident suffered minor injuries,” Sutter said.
According to the Anaheim Police Department, 16 people were detained as part of the investigation.
Police said an additional individual sustained injuries about 15 minutes after the initial shooting, when a single less lethal round was deployed.
“Fifteen minutes after the initial shooting, another individual, identified as 18-year-old Emmanuel Cordova, jumped from the backyard into the front yard and ignored repeated commands while possibly tampering with evidence.” the department said.
“A single less-lethal bean bag round was deployed, striking Mr. Cordova. He was treated at the hospital for a minor injury and medically cleared later that night.”
After the occupants complied, officers secured the residence. The investigation remains ongoing.
In line with standard procedure for officer-involved shootings, reviews were begun by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Anaheim Police Department detectives, Internal Affairs, and the Major Incident Review Team.
Police said body-worn camera footage and other related video were expected to be released in the near future.
Anyone with information about the shooting was urged to call Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-847-6227.
