BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — The inmate who attacked Gabriela Bustamonte, the mother accused of torturing and killing 8-year-old Genesis Mata, was sentenced to a low-term, two-year sentence in a CDCR prison and was denied probation, according to a Kern County Superior Court official.

Bustamonte was attacked on August 8, 2025, at the Lerdo Pre-Trial Jail by Anita Doron, who spoke with Eyewitness News, expressed no remorse for her actions and stated she would do it again. She revealed that she and other inmates were aware of the abuse Genesis Mata suffered and avoided Bustamonte.
“There was another woman that she was talking to about her case, but I mean, no one really wanted to deal with her,” Doron said. “Some of the girls had seen her not taking it too seriously. She had come back from court, and she was laughing and giggling and stuff, and they were just like, Why, what’s funny?”
“When you’re faced with someone that’s gross and has no remorse, you kind of don’t want to deal with it because you don’t want to take it to where you want to take it,” Doron said. “I would definitely do this again.”
Doron was in custody at the time for evading a police officer and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

Bustamonte was hospitalized after the attack and returned to Lerdo Jail shortly after.

She is due in court tomorrow with Ray Mata, Jr., for a readiness hearing before trial. Both, who pleaded not guilty, are accused of torturing and killing 8-year-old Genesis Mata at the La Quinta Inn on August 2, 2025. Genesis was found dead in a bathtub.
