A 27-year-old man is under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence Thursday after allegedly striking and injuring eight Anaheim High School track athletes at an Anaheim intersection.

The students were waiting on the southwest corner of North Harbor Boulevard and North Street – less than a mile from Anaheim High School – for the light to change and continue their run at about 2:55 p.m. when the driver swerved off the road, onto a sidewalk, and struck them, according to Anaheim police Sgt. Matt Sutter.

The students were taken to a hospital with varying degrees of injuries, Sutter said.

NBC 4 reported the driver was taken to a hospital and was later arrested by police.

” He showed some degree of objective signs of intoxication,” Sutter said.

The team’s coach was behind the students and was running up to them when the collision happened, Sutter said.

CBS 2 reported all of the students were expected to survive.
